A Complete Guide to Canadian Student Visas

Canada remains one of the premier global destinations for international students. However, recent policy updates in 2024–2026 have changed the financial requirements and caps. Here is what you need to know.

1. The GIC Financial Update

The Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) requirement has increased. For 2026 applicants, you must show a GIC of $20,635 CAD in addition to your first year's tuition fee to prove you can support yourself.

2. Designated Learning Institutions (DLI)

Ensure your acceptance letter comes from a registered DLI with an approved PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) status. Not all courses or private colleges qualify for post-study work rights anymore.

3. Step-by-Step Application Steps

  • Step 1: Get your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) where required.
  • Step 2: Open a student GIC account with a bank (Scotiabank, CIBC, etc.) and deposit $20,635 CAD.
  • Step 3: Take your medical exam and language tests (IELTS Academic or PTE Academic).
  • Step 4: Submit your study permit application online through the IRCC portal.

By following these steps, you minimize the risk of visa rejection. Contact our agents today for a free review of your SOP.
